For all seven days of New York Fashion Week, I found myself head to head with the same little wardrobe emergency and lost every time. At 7 am, in front of my floor-length mirror, I loved (loved!) My outfits. By 3pm those same clothes were either too hot, too cold, or too unsuitable for the weather. Give inspiration to endless trips home for a change, instead of focusing on the real point of fashion week: the catwalks.
This is a manifestation of the semi-annual dilemma caused by the difficult transition climate. No matter how many times you check the Weather app or repack your bag, fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable forecasts can challenge even the most seasoned dressers between March and April, August and September. “It’s almost as if you’ve forgotten how to dress when the weather changes,” agrees Natalie Joos, founder of JoosTricot. “After a hot summer I always have a hard time figuring out how to dress in layers.”
But, Joos continues, tackling transition time outfits is like riding a bicycle: it takes practice and a dose of patience. With the right mindset, it’s also a time to get creative with pops of color and layer combinations, adds Lili Chemla, founder of LeSet. “For me this means sweaters on the shoulders, ankle socks with shoes and my current obsession is a long-sleeved shirt under a slip dress, embracing a ’90s moment,” she says.
And what to actually buy in these moments? “Winter-to-spring transition pieces are certainly the hardest pieces to spot and shape,” says The Nines in-house stylist Lisa Sanchez, “but the search for other seasonal transition pieces may be easier than you think. “. Next, find seven expert-recommended essentials to get you started.
The cardigan forever
“Focusing on garments that lend themselves to infinite style is essential for these moments between seasons and a classic cardigan can really do it all,” designer Jenni Kayne tells us. The limit of ways to tie, drape or button a cardigan almost nothing exists.Exposure A: Bella Hadid’s one arm in and one out sweater style.
There are also more conventional paths to cardigan styling, all prepared for days when the temperature fluctuates from cold to crisp: draped across both shoulders, tied at the waist, or buttoned all the way through. Get a layered garment with one of the amazing cardigan options recommended by our experts above, from boxy and short to soft and oversized, or check out the complete modification of BAZAAR the shirts preferred by the editors.
The shoe between the two
Among designers, publishers and stylists, two styles of shoes have risen above the others as the best to wear before fall (and even after). First, walkable loafers to add a prep-lite touch to casual outfits. Secondly, ankle boots to give a little momentum to day and night without the weight and warmth of a real winter boot. Just be sure to keep the shades neutral – Sanchez says they’re the easiest shades to coordinate with late summer and fall palettes, making morning accessories a breeze.
Presenting the perfect complement to those summer to fall shoes above and the accessory that all New York Fashion Week street style had in common this season. Chemla rotates Comme Si socks through some transition outfits in which hers are a must: with a moccasin and a minidress; with slippers, cropped trousers and oversized buttons; or with jersey and knitted tank top.
The shades for the whole year
“Sunglasses are generally considered a summer time,” he says BAZAAR The collaborator of fashion editor Kerry Pieri, “but I love how the right ones paired with a turtleneck and jeans look so good.” She designed a capsule with Nessy Khem that combines matte frames and tinted lenses for a crisp look from summer to fall (literally). If you’re playing classic, choose a slightly cat-eye or square shape in neutral matte or tortoiseshell for maximum mileage. Whatever pair you wear, “Add a gold chain necklace to get all the Old Celine advertising vibes,” suggests Pieri.
The all-season midi dress
Here is an essential piece that you can wear all year round, including the toughest days. Sleeveless or short-sleeved dresses in breathable poplin can be worn in layers with a fabric T-shirt in cold weather; until the official arrival of autumn, the more modest cuts are ready as they are. Sanchez recommends polka dot or floral dresses for an extra touch.
The stylist adds that Jennifer Lopez’s late summer dress rotation is a style lesson for transition time if you need inspiration. The same piece that is 80 degree perfection with nothing but a platform sandal stays relevant with an oversized blazer or sweater on colder days.
The knitted trousers
Knit pants are the breathable and versatile alternative to jeans or khakis, whether you double up on soft fabrics with that cozy new cardigan or try a juxtaposition of off-duty patterns in an oversized button. Joos often wears her pairs with a long-sleeved crop top for the transitional climate: together, they’re “still breezy and light but covered enough for a cold night.”
The light jacket
Bloomingdale’s ready-to-wear fashion director Arielle Siboni predicts all that is useful: cargo pants! Bomber! More cargo pants !: will continue to dominate fashion throughout the fall and next spring. Lightweight utility jackets from Nili Lotan to Sacai face infatuation; they are also an ideal midlayer for days that start and end cold, but hardly require a down jacket. If other items in the utility aesthetic family go out of style, these jackets’ classic lines and comfort-focused designs are insensitive to trends, meaning they will be your last transitional weather layer from now to eternity.
