The Knives out And There is no time to die star received both praise and criticism for her portrayal of Monroe in the highly anticipated film.
Ahead of its release next week, here’s everything you need to know blonde.
Netflix’s new Blonde movie explained in nine points
What’s up blonde from? The new Netflix movie is based on a novel about Marilyn Monroe. The book, by Joyce Carol Oates, provides a highly fictionalized account of Monroe’s life.
The film contrasts with Monroe’s bubbly personality on screen with his troubled private life. The actress and singer was one of the biggest stars of the 1950s, but she had addiction and mental health issues behind closed doors.
Ana De Armas was cast for the role of Monroe in 2019. Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain were both previously linked to the role.
The casting sparked a backlash. When the trailer was released, some fans disputed that De Armas had slipped into his natural Cuban accent, but Monroe’s legacy praised the “great casting choice.” The actress spent nine months with a dialect teacher trying to mimic Monroe’s voice.
De Armas believes that Monroe’s ghost haunted the film set. She said, “She was with us. I think she was happy. Sometimes she even threw things off the wall and got mad if she didn’t like something.”
Critical reviews have been mixed. The Times called the film “jaw-dropping” while The Guardian said it was “moving, outspoken and intensely irritating”. However, De Armas’s performance was widely praised, making her a prime favorite for an Oscar.
The film’s depiction of sexual assault caused controversy. The US website Vulture described one scene as “disturbing” and “exploitative”, and the Daily Beast called it “horrible”.
De Armas said it was “disgusting” that her nude scenes from Blonde will go viral online. “It’s shocking just to think about it,” she added. “I can’t control it. You can’t really control what they do and how they get things out of context.”
blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominick. Adrien Brody and Bobby Cannavale are the co-stars of Monroe’s husbands, Arthur Miller and Joe DiMaggio. Caspar Phillipson plays US President John F Kennedy, who allegedly had an affair with Monroe.
Blonde will be released on Netflix on September 28th. Watch the trailer below:
