Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, who is running for governor of Arkansas, was operated on Friday for thyroid cancer.

Sanders announced he had the surgery after a biopsy earlier this month revealed he had thyroid cancer.

“Today I underwent successful surgery to remove the thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes and by the grace of God I am now cancer free,” Sanders said in a statement released by her campaign. “I want to thank Arkansas doctors and nurses for their world-class care, as well as my family and friends for their love, prayers and support.”

Sanders, 40, said he was looking forward to returning to the election campaign soon. Sanders’ last public event was Saturday at the Arkansas Razorbacks football game.

Sanders, who served as a spokesperson for former President Donald Trump until 2019, is in the running against Democratic candidate Chris Jones. She is the daughter of former Governor Mike Huckabee.

Sanders, who broke fundraising records in the race, is heavily favored in the predominantly Republican state of Arkansas. The current Republican governor of the state, Asa Hutchinson, will step down in January due to term limits.

A Sanders doctor said in a statement that he expected him to get back on his feet within the next 24 hours. Dr. John R. Sims, a surgeon at the CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock, said Sanders will need adjuvant radioactive iodine treatment and ongoing long-term care.

Sims said Sanders’ cancer was stage 1 papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type of thyroid cancer, and said it has an “excellent” prognosis.

“I think it’s fair to say that she’s cancer-free now, and I don’t expect any of that to slow her down,” said Sims.

During Sanders’ nearly two-year tenure at the White House, he debunked daily television briefings after repeatedly battling reporters and facing questions about his credibility. But he has also earned the respect of reporters by working behind the scenes to develop relationships with the media.

Sanders was well known in Arkansas politics before launching her governor’s offer, dating back to when she appeared in advertisements for her father’s campaigns. She managed the election for Senator John Boozman in 2010 and served as an advisor to Senator Tom Cotton in 2014.

She dealt primarily with national issues in the Arkansas rush, promising to use the governor’s office to fight President Joe Biden and the “radical left.”
