Many actors have portrayed the queen on screen during her 70-year reign, and some have spoken out to pay homage to Queen Elizabeth II.

His rich life has proved to be a breeding ground for television and movies, with many stories to tell about the longest-serving monarch.

Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of The crownshe said she was “honored” to play the late monarch.

Speaking to the BBC, Foy said: “I think he was an incredible monarch. He brought people together and was a huge symbol of continuity, dignity and grace.”

Olivia Colman, who replaced Foy as the queen for seasons three and four of The crownshe also praised the monarch, telling Variety, “She made a promise as a young woman and she absolutely kept it with such dignity. We are all incredibly impressed with what she did.”

Helen Mirren, who in 2006 played the queen in a biopic for which she won an Oscar, paid tribute on Instagram.

Mirren wrote: “I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.”

The queen hasn’t been featured frequently on screen until recent years, beginning with the biopic starring Mirren about the royal family in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

The queen has been a main character in every season of Netflix The crowna portrait of the monarch from the Second World War to the present day.

In addition to Foy and Colman, Imelda Staunton will play an older queen in the show’s upcoming fifth and sixth seasons.
