More than a decade after Whitney Houston’s untimely death, the biopic I want to dance with someone he will dramatize his story on the big screen. The Sony film, produced by the singer’s manager and sister-in-law Patricia “Pat” Houston, as well as her mentor, recording executive Clive Davis, unveiled the trailer on Thursday.
The two-minute clip features a young version of the future star (Naomi Ackie, of Master of None And The end of the fucking world) giving an impressive performance of “How Will I Know”, while Davis (played by Stanley Tucci) watches from the audience. “I may have just heard the greatest voice of his generation,” he says.
There are scenes that show Houston hearing his song on the radio for the first time, singing in church, coming out at the 1991 Super Bowl to deliver a spectacular version of the national anthem, and leaving his 1992 wedding to fellow music artist Bobby Brown. . Houston is told that “a common criticism” is that her music “isn’t black enough” and she quickly replies, “Look, I can’t sing black and I don’t even know how to sing white. I can sing.”
While the clip notes that the film is from Anthony McCarten, the writer of the 2018 biopic about Freddie Mercury Bohemian Rhapsodydoes not mention that Davis and Pat Houston are producers.
Fans seemed to approve of the project focusing more on the Emmy winner’s music than his private life, such as his drug addiction, his tumultuous relationship with Brown, and his odd relationship with his best friend, Robyn Crawford. They compared it to the 2015 Lifetime biopic starring Yaya DaCosta and it was directed by one of the Houston films Waiting to exhale co-stars, Angela Bassett. (It was easy to recount her turbulent years with Brown.)
“I’m speechless! I wish he were here to see his story told the right way. But I’m so excited to see this movie. It looks so good!” BritBrit Nicole commented below the YouTube trailer.
Marcel wrote: “Career based not drugs is enough for me. That’s what we’re here for.”
Helen Smith added: “Finally non life and tvone. A real feature film for the queen.”
“Say what you want, but Naomi Ackie looks stellar as Whitney Houston,” wrote JaylenExclusive. “The fact that the trailer didn’t show drugs, let us know they focused on the right thing. HIS VOICE, and it’s a damn moment. Yes, drugs will be shown because it was part of his struggles, but I’m glad the her main focus is her voice, the tribute that Whitney deserves. She was more than her demons !!! “
“Oh, I can’t wait to go see this,” im Hatten wrote, “and just by looking at this trailer, I already know this movie is going to be A MILLION TIMES better than that bad Lifetime biopic (starring Yaya DeCosta in role of Whitney). “
Brown said so himself Scoreboard in May he was optimistic I want to dance with someone he would focus more on his ex-wife’s talent and accomplishments.
“I really hope they let her rest and also that our relationship rests,” Brown said. “I don’t know anything about the biopic Clive is making. But hopefully it won’t dive into our relationship. Hopefully it’s more about the music and not his personal life.”
I want to dance with someone arrives in theaters on Wednesday 21 December.
